How to Teach Preschoolers Numbers & Counting

10 Fun Ways to Teach Preschool Kids About Numbers & How to Count

Preschoolers are information magnets. They are usually eager to learn new things and love to show what they know. Because preschoolers learn best through creative activities and play, it is important to make "learning time" fun, engaging, and stress-free.  This will ensure that little learners will develop a love for learning and not an aversion to it. Here are some fun ways to teach preschoolers about numbers and how to count:

1. Number Treasure Hunt:
Hide numbers around the classroom or play area, then tell the children to find the numbers. Next time, hide the numbers and have the children search for a specific number.

2. Counting with Nature:
Take the children outdoors and encourage them to count flowers, leaves, or rocks they find in nature.

3. Number Songs and Rhymes:
Use catchy number songs and rhymes to help children remember the sequence of numbers.

4. Number Bingo:

Create a fun bingo game with numbers and let the preschoolers mark off the numbers as they are called out.

5. Number Storytime:
Read fun number-themed story and picture books that involve counting and numerical concepts.

6. Number Puzzles:
Provide simple number puzzles or jigsaw puzzles that require preschoolers to arrange numbers in the correct order.

7. Cooking Fun:
Involve the children in simple cooking activities that require measuring ingredients to reinforce their understanding of numbers.

8. Number Hopscotch:
Draw a hopscotch grid outside with numbers, and have the children jump to the numbers called out while counting aloud.

9. Number Activity Sheets:
Use fun number and counting activity sheets to introduce kids to the type of learning materials they will encounter in school.

10. Number of the Week:
Focus on one number each week, decorating it, counting objects that amount to the number, and practice tracing it.
